Stay Zeus

What is that sound? That’s the sound of a zoo. Zoos are good places for everyone- young  and old. However recently many people started to think otherwise. Let me tell you why - Harambe’s death at Cincinnati Zoo caused a great din around the world and put zoos under scrutiny, like a bacterium under a microscope, by animal rights activist groups. Which is why I think it’s time for us to revisit  the reasons why zoos were conceived in the first place.

Zoos were made for people to learn about animals – the young and old, the privileged and under-privileged and the naturalists. It didn’t matter why you went there. Whether it was to see animals, or to feed or adopt them, you always learned something.

Zoos also keep animals safe from poachers or hunters and other animals.

“Now, let’s say you’re a deer but the rest of your herd is gone or dead. You have a broken leg and are very vulnerable and could be attacked at any moment by carnivores or poachers.”This is where zoos play an important role. They help animals like that get back to health , while protecting them from poachers, hunters and carnivorous animals.

You may say animal sanctuaries are a better option to zoos, but I would disagree. More animals are poached every year in a sanctuary, and there is no record maintained of the total number of animals being poached in sanctuaries around the world. However a record is kept of each animal, for example,  more than 400,000 elephants are poached in a year.

In a word, zoos  prevent animals from dying out faster. If we shut zoos down, I believe that in a hundred years from now half of the species in the world will be extinct. So join me in the fight against shutting down zoos!

P.S The title is 'Stay Zeus' because Zeus (the god) used to come down to Earth and people would ask him to stay. So, I am advocating ‘Stay ZOOS!!!'

  1. Hmmm..controversial topic. Many argue that keeping animals in cages border on abuse as they arent treated well and not in their original habitat. I get your arguments though...well written.

  2. Good zoos are fascinating places to visit. I love the Taipei Zoo. You are right, zoos are able to help fight extinction, but I think the greater need is to fight climate warming and save all those wild animals out there.
